Family, Childhood, and Education

Family, Childhood and Education are foundational arenas for child and youth development. Research in this area provides insights into how environments, public services, and policies can contribute to positive upbringing conditions and promote well-being, learning, and social inclusion.

The family is the child’s first and most important arena for development. Research on family dynamics covers topics such as parenting, relationships, child welfare, preventative programs, and public support systems. Particular emphasis is placed on how public services can support families in vulnerable life situations and contribute to safe and stable upbringing conditions. For example, follow-up research on the family support program “Foreldrekompasset” provides valuable knowledge about the effectiveness of such initiatives.

Childhood research explores how children and young people are influenced by family, local communities, recreational opportunities, and public services. Early intervention, interdisciplinary collaboration, and preventative measures are central themes. This research also investigates how disparities in living conditions and life circumstances can affect children’s development and opportunities. A significant contribution in this field includes analyses of the Ungdata survey, which provides insight into the daily lives and living conditions of youth.

Research on education focuses on how schools and kindergartens can foster learning, well-being, and social inclusion. Key topics include the school environment, special education measures, and students’ experiences during transitions between educational levels. Additionally, the implementation of the LK20 school reform is being examined, with a focus on how schools integrate key elements such as interdisciplinary topics and deep learning into practice.

This research forms the basis for practical tools and policies aimed at promoting the well-being, learning, and inclusion of children and young people across various arenas of life.
