ENGLISH ABSTRACT

English title: Promotion of life coping skills in the Sami ECEC

Factors that might contribute to how the environment can promote children’s ability to develop life coping skills constitute a complex context. Based on Antonovsky’s theories on «Sense of Coherence» (COS) and the «Salutogenic Model of Health», we discuss important factors for the Sami ECEC to promote life coping skills in its pedagogical work. We argue that these theories can contribute to a broad understanding of life coping skills in ECECs. By analyses of theory and previous research on Sami ECECs and culture, we find that a key factor in promoting Sami children’s life coping skills seems to be that ECECs promote Sami language and culture in a way that makes the child experience a connection between the ECEC’s pedagogy and the upbringing they receive at home. This requires that ECEC staff have a critical and reflective attitude towards creating such a connection. We claim that when ethnic identity is perceived as a collective negotiation of meaning, it can embrace the dynamics of culture in different contexts. We argue it is the ECEC’s and the society’s responsibility to create environments that strengthen the life coping skills of children – and not the individual children’s responsibility to develop individual coping strategies.
